The internet servers, where websites are stored, all have numeric addresses. When you buy a domain name, you're buying a name to go with the address because folks usually wouldn't remember the four groups of numbers that comprise the address. However, we hope they’ll remember the name. Tying the name to the address and then protecting that name on your behalf is why you buy a domain name. It is yours as long as you pay for it and while you host it with the Small Businessman’s HeckaHosting division, it’s completely included in your hosting price.
In order to see your web page, it must be uploaded to the server at an Internet address that your name resolves to. Of course, somebody has to create the page, usually by writing html code into a document, before sending the document to the server. The creator usually uses a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) type program to do the uploading to your server space. You can do this yourself, but many folks find that having an expert to the work frees them up for the creative and redundant tasks of running their day to day businesses. Unless you're really good at websites and enjoy it, designing your own alone is often a really bad idea. There are many tricks to doing it properly and then to have folks find it on the Internet so that you can get some business from the site referrals.
